Coach’s Corner
My martial arts journey started in 1988, when I was 10 years old. After being ruthlessly bullied by kids in my neighborhood, my mother enrolled me in a local karate program to help me build confidence and discipline. Through the years I’ve trained in karate, Aikido, Jeet Kune Do and for the last 12 years, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I earned the rank of black belt in 2022. My son also trains and is currently in the kids program that I teach at Fishkill on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s.
As a parent, I see the benefits of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu first hand. Through regular training, the kids develop a high level of strength, flexibility, and agility. It is also an excellent way to maintain health and develop lifelong habits that promote physical well-being.
In addition to the physical benefits, BJJ is an effective tool for developing discipline, respect, and perseverance. The children are taught to set goals and work towards achieving them, which boosts their self-confidence and self-esteem. BJJ also teaches children to solve problems without resorting to violence, promoting non-violent solutions to conflicts.
Moreover, BJJ provides a sense of community and belonging that can benefit children both socially and emotionally. The gym is a space where children can form strong bonds with their teammates and learn to work together towards a common goal. It can also provide an outlet for children to express themselves and learn to control their bodies and emotions in a healthy way. – Coach Al
